Enter the Mind of Noah

The other day Noah and I were building with blocks and I began to question him what it was exactly that we were building.  A lot of times we just build for building’s sake.  Good times had by all.  This time he was persistent to get it just right.  We put up the four walls and then added two slanted pieces to simulate a roof line.  The walls were tall, towering, and void of windows.  Their was one way in, no way out.  Their was a parking lot and a prefered parking space near the door for the wealthiest individual.  All of the people were sitting in a straight row in the very back of the facility.  Then there were 4 people on the opposite wall, they were all standing.

I got really curious and asked him what we were building and who all of these people were.  He responded with this is a church.  These are the people, and this is the worship team.  (I had to help him with the term worship team, that wasn’t natural, but they were clearly defined in his mind.)  Church through the eyes of a 5 year old

I watched as he carefully and intentionally positioned people, and blocks.  He was sure that he was building the church.  In reality he is.  This looks a lot like our churches, right?  What if we looked at the book of Acts and the early church?  Would we come to the same architectural structure?  What about the placement of people, would that be the same too?  I doubt it.

However, by the time Noah turned five he has a pretty good idea of what the church in the west looks like.  I hope that when I am building blocks with Noah’s children that maybe the face of the church would look a little different, a little more like a group of people huddled together rather than neatly lined up in a row.  Maybe it would be in a facility of some sort, just not so predictable.  Can you imagine church being any different than it is now?  Should it look a little different than it does now?  What do you think?

Oh by the way, Woody and Army Man stopped by because they heard the wonderful music inside.  They said they weren’t really into the whole God thing, so they sat in the balcony that day.

Can you spot all of the things that are messed up with Noah’s form of church?  Tell me what you see.

Action vs Advertising

I just started a new book last night, and I am loving it already.  I knew it was going to be good when I was already underlining in the Foreword!   I have started Killing Cockroaches by Tony Morgan.  I made it all the way to page 7 when I had to stop and think about this one for a little bit…  This was too good not to share!

“Action speak louder than advertising”

WOW!  That is spot on.  We need to be defined by who we are and how we serve those outside of the church rather than the image of our building or who the current hot shot pastor is in town.

James 2:15-17  ”Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accomplished by action, is dead.”

Morgan writes, “You can’t buy the media coverage you’ll receive if you remain faithful to God’s design for the church and stay active in people’s lives by addressing their physical and emotional needs.”

I think that this is right on the money…  What do you think?

Thoughts on Chan: Part 1

Okay, so I promised that I would expound a little bit more on what I learned from Francis Chan’s challenge to the group at the Shift Conference, at Willow Creek Community Church.  Well, here we go.  (If you haven’t gotten a chance to watch his teaching yet, jump over here and do it now!)

I couldn’t agree with Francis more…  Let’s just put it out there right now.

I was challenged… moved… and convicted.  At the end of this session I was just blown away.  I loved the quote that Francis said, “I believe the church needs a radical shift, I believe youth ministry needs a radical shift, I believe I need a radical shift.  Every time I read the book of Acts, I don’t put it down and say, ‘Man that’s just like us.’”  I laughed out loud, and winced a little on the inside.  It was funny and sad at the same time.  Clearly he was being sarcastic there at the end…  Funny because he worded it in a humorous way.  Yet at the same time, there is truth that resonates with me and it is unbelievably painful to think about.   Are our churches like the book of Acts?

I love when Francis just says really simply, okay, so it’s not the same as back then, but they had the same Holy Spirit that we do!  This is an incredible thought!  We have the same Holy Spirit that Peter and John had, and we have the same “Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead” inside of us, why are we so complacent and frustratingly timid?

More on this tomorrow…

But here’s a question for you today…  How are you and God doing?  How are you the Holy Spirit and you doing?  Have you put Him in a box?

hmm…

Tuesday’s Thoughts

crazy-love

I can’t stop thinking…

“God put me in Simi Valley, California, to lead a church of comfortable people into lives of risk and adventure.  I believe He wants us to love others so much that we go to extremes to help them.  I believe He wants us to be known for giving- of our time, our money, and our abilities- and to start a movement of “giving” churches.  In so doing, we can alleviate the suffering in the world and change the reputation of His bride in America.  Some people, even some at my church, have told me flat out, “You’re crazy.”  But I can’t imagine devoting my life to a greater vision.  We need to stop giving people excuses not to believe in God.  You’ve probably heard the expression, “I believe in God, just not organized religion.”  I don’t think people would say that if the church truly lived like we are called to live.  The expression would change to “I can’t deny what the church does, but I don’t believe in their God.”  At least then they’d address their rejection of God rather than use the church as a scapegoat.”  {Francis Chan, “Crazy Love pg. 21-22}

What if OUR church looked like that.

What if we looked like that…

or…

What if I looked like that?

See, it starts with me.  It starts with you!

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO IN ORDER TO SEE THIS HAPPEN?

Reflect Christ

Have you realized yet that you interact with hundreds and thousands of people a year?  Dependent upon your job, you may meet and greet several thousand people a year.  If you live in a neighborhood, or development.  If you live in what we have commonly called a town, city, or village…  likely you will run into people. And here’s the deal.  People are messy.  People are really dirty.  They have problems.  They have issues!  BOY DO THEY HAVE ISSUES!  Everyone has issues but me.  (Ever find yourself saying that?)  What do we do with all of these dirty, messy, smelly, people filled with issues when we run into them.  You know, the kind that barge into your life with all kinds of problems.  How do you and I handle these moments?  What is it that we will do?

We have started a new teaching series here with both of our groups, Junior High & Senior High.  We’re calling it “Reflect Christ”.  We are looking at how Christ showed compassion on the people He found surrounding Him.  There were thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of interactions that Jesus had with people.  The question of a good disciple should be, when I run into people how should I interact with them?  Better yet, how would my Rabbi, my discipler, my Lord, my teacher interact with this person?  How can I reflect the teacher?  How can I reflect Christ?  We are looking at three different examples of how Christ dealt with three different groups of people.  They are:

  1. The Person I don’t know
  2. The Person I know
  3. The Person I know the best

What do you think compassion really is?  How can we show compassion to those around us?  Whoever they may be…  No matter what category they fit into.

I just can’t stop thinking about this question: “How are we going to deal with those we find ourselves surrounded with?”

Thoughts?
